Illumivation was approached by Intersection and the Montana Dept. of Tourism to bring the wilderness to the city by installing a life size bear, moose, and bison on three subway headhouses of Chicago. Along with a digital and vinyl campaign, this composed the #MontanaMoment media activation.
We began the process by designing a temporary mounting system that would support the sculptures, each weighting several hundred pounds, during the activation, but would leave no mark on city property. Then the sculpting began. Each animal began as a rough foam form cut out on the CNC and supported by a steel structure. The foam was then coated in layers of fiberglass and resin and finally a sculptable exopy.
Each was lifted onto a heahouse by crane and were up for about a month. Then the sculptures were shipped to their final location in crates that looked as if the animals were breaking free.
